January 2018 Trip to Benin: News from James.
First of all, thanks to all of you that made our 2017 fundraising campaign a success!
In January, Shauna and I made a trip to the Couffo Region in Benin. The trip was very successful and it was great to see all of our friends there. We had several goals for 2018: Register The Couffo Collaborative in Benin, Expand the Women's Entrepreneurship and Mentoring Program, Plan for the School Supply Distribution Program, Explore the Organic Farming Training Program. Significant progress was made toward each of these goals, and I have included a detailed report on each below.
Over the next few months, Julien, our Benin project manager, will be visiting some new communities to help organize and lay the ground work for the Women’s Entrepreneurship and Mentoring Program. And along with ADESCH, he will help to organize the School Supplies Program for the fall semester and survey other communities for the Education and School Supplies Program. During this time, we will also continue to work with the Governor’s office to obtain our non-profit registration.
I will return to Benin in August to do further work with ADESCH on several of these goals. We will complete our NGO registration and work on the Education and School Supplies Program. If all goes well with our registration, we will be able to start looking for land to purchase for the Organic Farming Project. Also, August will be the end of the six-month loan period for the Women’s Program in Hondjin and I will be there to help with the collection of the loans.
We would like to thank you again for all the support you provided to improve the well-being of families and communities of the Couffo Region!
